Almost 1 year after planting them, VIB scientists harvested the GM poplar trees of the field trial in Zwijnaarde, Belgium. The poplars are part of VIB research aimed at contributing to the development of sustainable second generation biofuels. The trees have an altered wood composition that makes them more suitable for the production of bio-ethanol.
The team of Wout Boerjan at PSB (VIB/UGent, partner 4) is now comparing the wood composition and its conversion to biofuels to earlier results obtained in the greenhouse. The field trial will now continue for another six years.
